Welcome to LourdinRPG: A Family's Epic Quest to Build an RPG

The Beginning of Our Adventure

Every great adventure starts with a question. Ours was simple: "Dad, can we build a video game together?"

What started as a dinner table conversation turned into something far more magical than we ever imagined. LourdinRPG is more than just a turn-based fantasy RPG—it's a critical thinking experiment, a learning journey, and a testament to what happens when a family decides to dream with their eyes wide open.

My three kids (ages 10, 12, and 14) and I embarked on this quest not as seasoned game developers, but as dreamers with a shared vision: to create something epic, something fun, and something that would challenge us to solve real problems together.


What is LourdinRPG?

LourdinRPG is a web-based, turn-based fantasy RPG inspired by the classics we love—D&D mechanics, deep character customization, and tactical combat that rewards strategy over button-mashing.

Here's what we've built so far:

10 Unique Character Classes

Choose your path: tank as a Warrior, unleash arcane fury as a Wizard, strike from the shadows as a Rogue, or master divine magic as a Paladin. Each class has its own playstyle, progression, and role in combat.

D&D-Inspired Combat

Roll for initiative! Our turn-based combat system uses classic mechanics:

  • 1d20 attack rolls vs Armor Class
  • Stat modifiers (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA)
  • Critical hits on natural 20s
  • Status effects (buffs, debuffs, damage over time)
  • Class-specific abilities (Divine Smite, Bardic Inspiration, Rage)

Multiplayer Adventures (Our Pride and Joy!)

This is where things get really exciting. Team up with friends in real-time cooperative adventures:

  • Shared turn-based combat with 60-second action timers
  • 1d100 loot rolling system (highest roll wins the legendary sword!)
  • Smart AI replacement if someone disconnects mid-battle
  • Session recovery so network hiccups don't ruin your quest

We spent months refining the multiplayer system, and watching it come together was one of those "we actually did it!" moments that made all the late nights worth it.

Hand-Crafted Adventures

Explore multi-waypoint adventures with:

  • Story-driven progression (no random grinding!)
  • Boss encounters with guaranteed legendary loot
  • Premium adventures for subscribers (gotta keep the lights on!)

Equipment & Progression

  • 100+ weapons (from humble Iron Daggers to legendary Dragon Slayers)
  • 80+ armor pieces (light, medium, and heavy armor types)
  • 36 consumables (potions, elixirs, scrolls, and special items)
  • Tiered loot system (Common to Uncommon to Rare to Epic to Legendary)

The Learning Journey

Building LourdinRPG has been an incredible educational experience for all of us. Here's what we've learned (and are still learning):

Problem-Solving in Action

When multiplayer combat kept desyncing between players, we didn't give up—we debugged together. We learned about SignalR, real-time state management, and the importance of error handling. The kids watched bugs get squashed and features come to life, and they learned that failure is just iteration in disguise.

Math, Logic, and Systems Thinking

Every game mechanic is a lesson:

  • Probability: What's the chance of rolling a critical hit?
  • Balancing: How much HP should a Level 10 boss have?
  • Economy: What's a fair price for a Supreme Health Potion?

Creative Collaboration

We brainstormed monster names, debated class balance, and argued over loot drop rates. Everyone had a voice. Everyone contributed ideas. And yes, sometimes we disagreed—but we learned to compromise, iterate, and improve.

Dreaming with Eyes Wide Open

The biggest lesson? You can build anything if you're willing to learn. We didn't know how to build a multiplayer RPG when we started. We do now. And we're not done yet.


What's Next?

LourdinRPG is an ongoing project—think of it as an early access game where you get to watch it grow. Here's what's on our roadmap:

  • More classes and subclasses (Ranger spells, anyone?)
  • Guild system for player communities
  • PvP arenas (because sometimes you do want to fireball your friends)
  • Expanded adventures with branching storylines
  • Mobile optimization (play on the go!)
  • More monsters, loot, and boss encounters

We're learning as we go, and every feature is a family achievement.
